The current climate crisis is at the forefront of everyone’s concerns, especially for businesses and corporations. A study by the High Commissioner for Human Rights has shown that almost all CO2 emissions causing climate change, come from business-driven economic activity. Therefore, it is paramount that businesses employ more sustainable practices in order to reduce their carbon offset and help towards reversing the damages made to the environment.

At Raaft, we understand the importance of preserving the planet and are taking steps to reduce our carbon footprint and employ more sustainable business practices and processes. As part of these efforts, we have recently applied for and been granted a Positive Planet certification. In this article we are going to explain what this certification is and what it means for the environment and for us as a business.

What is a Positive Planet Certification?

Positive Planet are a ‘profit for purpose’ company, delivering solutions to businesses that will help them make more sustainable choices, tackle climate change, and improve lives. This company believes that ANY action, no matter how small, is better than none at all when it comes to tackling the climate crisis and is dedicated to supporting businesses on their path towards net-zero. They offer a range of structured sustainability certifications for businesses to apply for, including certified carbon neutral, certified net-zero, certified product/ service, and positive planet certified. These individual certifications all mean different things and entail different benefits for the accredited businesses.

The positive planet accreditation is an entry-level sustainability certification businesses can apply for. This certification shows the world that a business is committed to sustainable actions and shows that they have measured their impact on the planet and are actively working to reduce it.

What does the Positive Planet certification mean for Raaft?

This accreditation means many things for Raaft. As we strive to become a global market leader, we recognize our responsibility to provide roof terrace and podium systems that support our goals to achieve net-zero carbon emissions and contribute towards a greener environment for the future of our communities. This will not be a quick fix and we are aware of this, but we are fully committed to environmental sustainability and strive to successfully reach these goals.

So far, we have been discussing changes such as swapping to more sustainable materials on some of our products, swapping plastic for paper where we can, and encouraging biodiversity in our terrace system installations through creating habitats in our planters for bugs and animals. We are also currently working on achieving ISO14001 certification (set to be complete in 2022) to ensure our environmental management systems are in effect.

Our positive planet certificate will be a huge part of this process, helping us track our progress and will get our foot in the door for secondary accreditations such as the carbon neutral and net-zero certificates.
